To make our dreams come true, we sought out talented designers, artists, and artisans who could share and interpret our craziest imaginings. We are proud to introduce them.
By taking part in the design process and following every step in this colossal undertaking (which involved over a thousand pieces), we gained a better understanding of the artists and their work. Earth is an organic matter that can shrink or expand according to how it is treated. Plates are a mixture of earth and water that is, like food, prepared according to a recipe. They are as delicate as soufflés, so it is imperative to work with skilled artisans like the ones we were fortunate enough to find.
Interior design by Jean-Pierre Viau
Mr. Viau was entrusted with the design or our multipurpose establishment. He created precisely the space we needed—a coming together of sensuous materials and textures to blend with and complement our multifarious culture. The creation of our exclusive line of tableware: Pascale Girardin and Kathleen Proulx, ceramists; Caroline Beale, glassmaker; Félix Lapierre and Frédérick Bélanger, cabinetmakers
We didn’t know it at first, but creating an exclusive line of tableware is a monumental undertaking! We wanted tableware with simple, sleek lines and delicate, natural colors. We had no idea what we were getting into! Fortunately, we were able to call on the skills of exceptional artisans. The results were as impressive as their talents, surpassing our highest expectations.
Pascale Girardin
Pascale is a committed ceramist, who wants art to be useful and practical. To her, the act of creating demands an intimate relationship with the raw material. She designed a number of table accessories for us, including candleholders, fleur de sel dishes, plates, and even hanging lamps around our bar, which resemble enormous icicles penetrated by beams of light. A Quebec City native, she now lives and works in the Laurentians. In recent years, she has gained an excellent reputation in the restaurant industry.Kathleen Proulx
This ceramist’s need to express her creative energy has generated quite a buzz. For her, shaping a plate is child’s play. The adventure in designing, casting, and molding plates (eight models and over 900 pieces) for laurie raphaël has given her an expertise that few ceramists in Quebec possess. She accomplished the feat with the help of renowned professional molder Richard Lambert and his two assistants, Nicolas Coulombe and Karine Blanchet. This project would also not have been possible without the help of students from the Quebec City applied arts college and its principal, Mr. Noël.Caroline Beale
Glassmaker Caroline Beale designed the glass plates that showcase our fabulous desserts at laurie raphaël. Sadly, Ms. Beale succumbed to a long illness in the fall of 2006. Her spirit, however, lives on through her works at laurie raphaël. She found inspiration by watching our then pastry chef Thierry Rogosonski at work in our kitchen and matched the hues of her glasswork to the ingredients that go into our desserts. She will remain in our hearts forever.Another glassmaker, the very talented Judith Dubord, has taken over Ms. Beale’s duties and is ensuring the continuity and evolution of our line of glassware.
